Journey to the heart of the “Provençal Pompeii”

Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of Fréjus, this ancient city nicknamed the “Provençal Pompeii”, by crossing the doors of the Archaeological Museum.
Housed in the magnificent rooms of the episcopal group of Fréjus, this museum immerses you in the Roman era and invites you to discover the multiple facets of this thousand-year-old heritage.
Upon your arrival, a large model of the Forum Julii introduces you to the grandeur of this Roman city, revealing its monuments and its urban layout.

The two-headed bust of Hermes: the emblem of Fréjus and witness to Roman art

Among the treasures of the collection, the bust of the two-headed Hermes in Carrara marble stands out as the emblem of Fréjus.

This work, rediscovered in 1970, is a striking testimony to Roman art and grandeur.

Visitors will also be able to admire the Panther mosaic, a beautifully preserved masterpiece and a true symbol of ancient decorative art.

In each room, you enter the daily life of the inhabitants of the time, exploring their everyday objects, their monumental sculptures and their ceramics.

The Augustan House: Immersion in the Roman Art of Living

One of the highlights of the tour is the reconstruction of an Augustan house, whose mosaics and wall frescoes, typical of the early 1st century, recreate the atmosphere of a prestigious home. This immersive place allows you to discover the art of living of the Roman elites and their conception of refinement.

Ancient necropolises: funeral rites and beliefs of the Romans

An equally fascinating chapter awaits you in the room dedicated to ancient necropolises, where ceramic and glass funerary urns, fragments of sarcophagi and found offerings, such as mirrors and jewellery, bear witness to the funeral rites of the Romans and their beliefs about the afterlife.

In front of the two-headed Hermes, so familiar as a symbol of the city, I had the strange sensation of meeting a former inhabitant of Fréjus. Then, in the reconstruction of the Augustan house, I felt like a guest in a real Roman home. But what moved me the most were the objects in the necropolises. They evoke with such respect the funeral rites of this civilization. Each piece, each offering seems to whisper a farewell marked by dignity and serenity. And this model of Forum Julii! It left me speechless: how could I imagine that Fréjus once bore this grandeur? It is much more than a visit. It is an encounter with roots, a dive into the soul of Fréjus through the centuries.
