The work of Yvon Guidez: a sculpted tribute to the African soldiers of the Black Army

The poignant work was created by the sculptor Yvon Guidez, a student of César. It rests on a stone base, facing the sea.

The bronze statue represents five soldiers. They surround a white officer who is brandishing the French flag. Thus, this scene embodies both the courage and solidarity of the fighters.

The group exudes a solemn and symbolic presence. Indeed, their gaze turned towards the sky highlights the sacrifice and unity of the soldiers.

The epitaph, engraved by Léopold Sédar Senghor, former president of Senegal, perfectly sums up the spirit of the monument: "Passers-by, they fell fraternally united so that you remain French." This message underlines their fraternity, their commitment and their contribution to the defense of France.

The historical inspiration of the Memorial

a tribute to the memory of the Senegalese Riflemen

The Memorial is inspired by the first “Monument to the Heroes of the Black Army”, erected in Reims in 1924 in honor of the Senegalese Riflemen who fought during the Great War. However, this monument was destroyed in 1940.

Fréjus, a symbolic place, preserves the living memory of these soldiers thanks to this monument, created for the fiftieth anniversary of the landing in Provence.

The Fréjus Memorial was inaugurated in the presence of François Léotard, Minister of Defense and Mayor of the city. In addition, its installation was facilitated by the Association of Friends of the Marine Troops Museum, with the support of the Ministry of Defense.

This monument pays tribute to African soldiers. It does so forcefully, carrying powerful symbols and a meaningful story.
