Marine Troops: four centuries of adventure and memory

At the end of the Second World War, General de Lattre de Tassigny launched the creation of a place of remembrance. In March 1949, the project came to fruition at the École Militaire. It was then transferred to the Clignancourt barracks, where it settled permanently.

In 1965, the memorial moved to Fréjus, a strategic city since 1915. Fréjus then became the main garrison of the indigenous troops.

At the initiative of General Gallieni, the renovated barracks of the 'south-east camps' became the 'mother house' of the Marine Troops.

In 1979, the General Chief of Staff of the Army realized a dream: to transform the hall of honor into a museum.

The museum opened its doors in October 1981. Thanks to the support of the Association of Friends of the Museum, it doubled in size, reaching almost 2000 m².

The Musée des Troupes de Marine is much more than just a place of remembrance: it is a living tribute to the men who shaped the military history of France.

Both modern and immersive, it invites you to experience history, feel the emotion and understand the sacrifices of the Marine Troops.

My visit to the Musée des Troupes de Marine was a real emotional slap in the face. As a former soldier, I found here the soul of our commitments, the memory of our comrades, and the weight of this history that unites us. The recent renovations have given this place a new depth: between the 3D reconstructions and the immersive videos, each space takes us back to the heart of the battles, the sacrifices, but also the values that forged the Coloniale. The room dedicated to the heroes of the Troupes de Marine particularly struck me: the objects, the faces, the testimonies... Everything is imbued with immense respect for those who gave part of their life, or even their entire life, for their country. It is much more than a museum: it is a vibrant, sincere and universal tribute. I left there with immense pride, that of having belonged to this great family.
