Between history and wild nature

The Saint-Aygulf Customs Trail stretches over 200 kilometres along the Var coast, offering breathtaking views and a true journey through history.

Thus, between Fréjus and Roquebrune-sur-Argens, the path winds through a wild coastline, bordered by coves with crystal-clear waters.

Along its 8 kilometers, between rocks and secret coves, the soul of the place remains intact, suspended in time.

The Saint-Aygulf Customs Trail,

witness to an era of vigilance and serenity

Created in 1791, this path was originally a surveillance route. Customs officers, called “gabelous”, patrolled tirelessly to intercept smugglers and prevent the looting of wrecks. This land was their domain, an advanced post, always on the move, their eyes fixed on the waves and the horizon.

Today, you can walk in the footsteps of these lookouts. Look for the same calm, the same spectacle offered by the sea and the sky. Listen to the surf against the rocks, watch the seagull diving, feel the serenity of the fisherman at work.

Immersion in a preserved paradise

The Saint-Aygulf Customs Trail carries the memory of this era, while becoming the protector of landscapes of raw and preserved beauty.

Thus, by taking this path, you will experience a total immersion in nature. Between the coves with still virgin sands and the rocks sparkling with mica, each step brings you closer to the original paradise.

Moreover, it is at sunrise, when the sea is calm and the first rays of daylight touch the horizon, that the magic happens. The scene, worthy of a postcard, becomes a suspended moment where each breath of air seems to carry with it the history and timeless beauty of these shores.

Diving into Hidden Beauty: The Underwater World of the Coastline

As you walk along the coves and discover the hidden treasures of the coastline, you will also have the opportunity to dive into a fascinating underwater world. Equipped with a simple mask, you can explore the seagrass beds, real underwater meadows where colorful fish and cunning octopuses live. The latter cleverly hide in hiding places made of pebbles and debris. Thus, it is an encounter with life in all its simplicity and beauty.

A place rich in biodiversity

The Sentier des Douaniers was abandoned for a long time, after the role of customs officers changed. However, in the 70s, it experienced a renaissance thanks to the coastal law, which allowed everyone to rediscover this legendary path, which has now become a common good. Since then, it has become a true haven for nature lovers, hikers in search of adventure, as well as history buffs.

At the dawn of paradise: the timeless beauty of the trail

The centuries have not managed to erase this path, which has managed to preserve its wild and vibrant nature. The surf on the rocks, the diving of a seagull...

The fisherman's gesture, strong and precise, remains intact. Today, following in the footsteps of the elders, you yourself are the lookout.

Finally, when the sun rises on the horizon, a little bit of paradise comes to you.

I had the chance to walk the Sentier des Douaniers de Saint-Aygulf at dawn, just before the sun rose. The calm of the sea was like a waking dream. Walking along the wild coves, smelling the salty air… It’s a suspended moment, out of time. At each turn of the path, the sea offered me a new spectacle. A simple experience, but deeply magical.
