After the walking tour of the lakeside town of Port-Grimaud, the Varois Coastal Cycle Route continues along the Gulf of St-Tropez. Under the sun, taking a dip in the Mediterranean to cool off is very easy here! The arrival at Ste Maxime, at the Croisette beach, marks the end of the continuity of the cycle path. The cycle route turns northwest along the Préconil river, before bending its course towards the east overlooking the coast. The cyclist finds the railway right-of-way, a real balcony to glide to St-Aygulf like a tightrope walker on the wire of the Train des Pignes, between the foothills of the Massif des Maures, the coastal road and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. The Argens estuary marks the arrival in Fréjus.
The itinerary
From Port Grimaud, the route follows a cycle path along the seafront and the D559 to the Croisette beach in Ste-Maxime, which marks the end of the PCL markings. Be careful on this path, which is interspersed with car parks and direct access to the beaches for local residents or the public. Be careful at the Train des Pignes roundabout in Ste Maxime, which requires you to turn left in the middle of the traffic to take the retro-coastal route through Ste Maxime.
At the exit from Ste Maxime, we find the unmarked Train des Pignes cycle path which provides continuity to the St-Aygulf campsite.
In St-Aygulf, cycle path development in progress: opposite the campsite, take Av. du Train des pignes on the right to turn left with your bike in hand onto rue d'Alsace in the one-way direction, and thus find the cycle path along the D559 at the exit.
In Fréjus, at the end of the cycle path on Rue des Batteries, turn left then straight ahead onto Rue des Campanettes. Then turn right onto Impasse Georges Guynemer, which continues into Rue Georges Guynemer. Turn left to reach Avenue d'Argens (D559) and turn right onto this avenue. At the roundabout with Bd. de la mer (D98B), follow signs for Fréjus Centre (3rd exit).
