Les Joutes Provençales « Hermès Fréjus »
Provençal jousting is a fight on the water between two people, each on a boat,
on top of a board called in Provençal teintine, and the aim of the game is to send your opponent into the water using a lance. Each jouster is protected by a wooden breastplate and holds a witness in his left hand which must prevent him from catching his opponent's lance.
Provençal jousting is a French method of nautical jousting: a combat on the water between two people, each on a boat. This jousting method is divided into two committees, each comprising eight societies: the Provence Committee and the Côte d'Azur Committee.
The Provence committee: Istres, Fos-sur-Mer, L'Estaque, Martigues, Port-de-Bouc, Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, Cassis and Arles.
The Côte d'Azur committee: La Ciotat, Sanary-sur-Mer, Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus, Agay, Théoule-sur-Mer and Cannes.
There are also two former companies: Saint-Chamas, Roquebrune-sur-Argens
Provençal jousting is a sport for enthusiasts. Practiced from May to September, this strength sport originally brought together only men, but today, it attracts more and more women.
This method is characterized by its violence and extreme codification. The attacks between players are virile and the dives very loud. There are some additional rules compared to other nautical jousts, notably that of not having the feet together at the time of the strike, in fact the jouster places his left foot in front of a white line and his right foot behind this line, if the jouster's right foot crosses the white line at the time of the strike he is disqualified in favor of his opponent only if he passes by the front.
