JONAS&LANDER – "Bate Fado"

Considered among the most inventive Portuguese choreographers of their generation, Jonas&Lander takes spectators on a journey through a hybrid creation that fuses dance and music.
Have you heard of fado batido? Energetic, virtuoso, and inspired by tap dancing, it was once widely practiced in Lisbon, particularly by the poorest sections of society, until the turn of the last century.
Like samba or flamenco, fado, now reduced to its simple vocal expression, was in fact a dance with various variations. And its 'beaten' form, which combines the rhythm of guitars with percussion born from body movements, was undoubtedly one of the most authentic. Drawing from this invigorating source, Jonas Lopes and Patrick Lander stage a joyful dance concert that restores fado to its original stride.
In a pared-down setting resembling an open-air bandstand, four dancers enter into communion with four guitarists and a singer (Jonas himself), without one ever dominating the other. Heels striking the ground contrast with lascivious poses that recall how, under Salazar's fascist regime, this dance, with its Afro-Brazilian origins and supposedly indecent, was put under surveillance. Bate Fado thus awakens awareness of this forgotten past. Like a research laboratory, the piece explores and reinterprets the choreographic face of a music that was added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2011.
