Christmas in Fréjus means Christmas in every neighborhood and for 1 month!

On the program, ice rink, gourmet Christmas market to enjoy the sweet treats of these end-of-year celebrations and find original gift ideas. All kinds of entertainment for the whole family or the unmissable event for everyone: the big launch party always eagerly awaited.

A festive air resonates in the historic heart where strolling to discover some 300 decorations and illuminations at nightfall gives a magical atmosphere. Penguin, teddy bear or even 3D Santa Claus will amaze the little ones and make the older ones fall back into childhood.

That's not all! There will be many activities for young and old, from the funfair on Place Agricola to the arrival of Santa Claus and parades.

And because sharing is an essential value of our territory, traditions are always put at the forefront: the Provençal nativity scene at the Tourist Office, to which new locations come each year, the Provence santon fair in the Riculphe room at the Town Hall, etc.

One thing is certain, in Fréjus, between decorations, music and entertainment, the Christmas atmosphere will accompany you in the streets to make you spend wonderful end-of-year celebrations!

Christmas comes from a pagan festival, Saturnalia, celebrated in December during ancient Rome. During this festival, the Romans organized large banquets. Even today, families gather around a large meal. Later, Saturnalia was extended until December 25 to coincide with the festival of the sun. The Romans celebrated the birth of Sol Invictus, a solar deity. In the 25th century, the Christian church chose to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December XNUMX, at the same time as the festival of the Sun.

And what about gifts? Under the Roman Empire, tradition dictated that gifts were given on January 1st: lucky plants at first, then food and objects of all kinds. An exchange of gifts was therefore common at this time of year. Christmas gradually became the day of gifts!

Please note that the exhibition at the local history museum: “Provençal nativity scene and toys of yesteryear” will be held until January 5, 2025.
