It is the story of a meeting of artists and enthusiasts.

The artist illustrator Éric GARENCE opens his capsule at CAP 3000. Attracted by the “FRÉJUS” corner, César MALFI admires Éric’s poster creations for the Fréjus Tourist Office. Eric makes the connection and introduces César to Axel ALDEGUER, Communications Officer and representative of the Tourist Office.

Nobody knows it yet, but at the start of 2022, the story of “FRÉJUS, L'INTRÉPIDE” begins…

The same passion for Romanity and history, a strong attachment to sharing our heritage to make it accessible while putting it "into modernity" and more, this enthusiasm and this vision to communicate to the greatest number give rise to the idea of creating a work in Fréjus.

The same passion for… Fréjus.

CÉSAR MALFI Wall Master

In the beginning, there was an end.
That of Cesar BALDACCINI.
Then came Cesare MALFI.
As if his parents already wanted to make history. He didn't inherit this story, he invented it.

Lulled by the sound of the waves of the Big Blue, César Malfi draws, paints and sculpts his inspirations and questions almost everything. His Italian roots, his travels in Greece, the discoveries he makes in the muses, the teachings of his history and law teachers. During this long walk, César shares with his friends from the Nice school Armand, Sosno and Ben his vision of art, the street, culture and his role within the city as an artist.

A formidable technician, César has been building walls since he was little. And he dresses these walls. Whether they are on a facade facing the sea, on a castle, a library or a church. Walls are wonderful playgrounds because they invite residents to define the work, to participate in its design until they appropriate it forever. This work then resides in the heart of the city, a town or a neighborhood, broadcasting a universal message on a daily basis, better than any advertising visual.

Ultimately, it is an opening, a proposal for dialogue, a bridge between different geographical areas, different cultures and different people that Caesar proposes. His power is infinite.

César's work has been praised several times by the media, cultural leaders of the Nice Metropolis and big names in urban art. César represents the collective of Nice artists through which he donates 5% of his income to support the development of art in his hometown after minorities and young people.

One day, his spiritual father confessed to him that art essentially lies in asking the right questions.

"What if the Mona Lisa was not a woman, would she be the Mona Lisa?" "What if it was "just" a self-portrait?" "What if the Venus de Milo still had her arms, what would she do with them today?"

Thirsty for knowledge and challenges, passionate about art and history, Caesar reinterpreted ancient history and its great figures in his own way by questioning their identity and their place in our society today.

"Spectacular, majestic, intelligent, technically accomplished, César's work is illustrated in painting and sculpture, from Nice to Tel Aviv, from Buenos Aires to Rio and from Montreal to Los Angeles." D. ZAKINE

The Caquot Hangar: top model of the fresco

Built in 1935, it is one of the first hangars with a "double canopy" in reinforced concrete designed by the engineer Albert Caquot for the needs of aviation.

Damaged during the Malpasset dam disaster, it is an essential cultural element for the people of Fréjus.

Today, the Caquot hangar is considered a historical monument and an important witness to the history of the Fréjus region, steeped in the history of naval aviation: it saw Roland GARROS take off from Fréjus on September 23, 1913 for the first crossing of the Mediterranean by plane.

The Caquot hangar is now used for the major festive events in Fréjus (ROC D'AZUR, SUMMER VIBES FESTIVAL, etc.) and is a popular tourist attraction in the town.

This site, now the François Léotard Nature Base, is, with its 135 hectares including 85 of protected natural spaces, the largest leisure area in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

FRÉJUS, THE INTREPID: the hearts of the project…

Fréjus has a long and rich history dating back to ancient times. Founded by the Romans in 49 BC, it was an important military and commercial base on the road that linked Rome to Spain.

It has experienced many invasions and destructions, notably by the Saracens in 739 and by the Barbary pirates in 1558. However, the city has always been able to rebuild and develop thanks to its flourishing port and its prosperous trade.

After the Malpasset disaster, the city of Fréjus had to face a critical situation. The inhabitants were traumatized and many families had lost everything.
But the city has shown great resilience and has been able to recover from this tragedy.

Its status as “The Intrepid” is a reminder of the city’s history and its courageous and determined spirit that has enabled it to overcome challenges and prosper over the centuries.

FRÉJUS, a city of character, is the result of a fierce fight and unwavering tenacity. Over the centuries, the city has accumulated successes and trophies, thus creating an open-air museum. Every street corner, every monument, every fresco tells a story, testifying to the cultural and historical wealth of this city (30 historical monuments!).

From the Saint-Léonce cathedral, a jewel of Romanesque art, to the Caquot hangar, witness to aerial exploits, passing by the Roman arenas, vestiges of the city's glorious past, each monument is an invitation to a journey through time.

FRÉJUS, an intrepid city, has never given up on defending its values, its culture and its history. Today, it continues to stand proudly as a city full of life and emotion, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience, this new work is the symbol of it.

FRÉJUS, THE INTREPID: Caesar's inspiration

Major figures among the Olympian Gods, these gods represent fearlessness par excellence. Zeus killed his father Cronus to free his brothers and sisters Hades, Hera and Poseidon locked inside him.
From then on, they overthrew the Titans, freed their brothers and sisters imprisoned in Tartarus and became the Gods of Olympus.

Together, they embody a figure of resilience in the image of the City of Fréjus which courageously recovered from the Malpasset dam disaster.

Their alliance illustrates the tenacity with which the people of Fréjus have together overcome the trials that fate has put in their path.

A tribute to the spirit of Jean Cocteau (who decorated a chapel in Fréjus, the fresco will be a historical journey through the stylized or figurative representation of the great names who have marked the history of Fréjus, including Julius Caesar (founder of Forum Iuli), Napoleon Bonaparte and Roland Garros (for the first crossing of the Mediterranean by plane from Fréjus).

Green, blue, yellow in pure colors will evoke the Mediterranean, the Esterel and the sun, major tourist elements of the destination.
