The Caquot space, a true icon of aeronautical engineering in the 1930s, is a striking testimony to the technical advances made for maritime aviation.
Designed by engineer Albert Caquot, a pioneer in the application of reinforced concrete to aeronautics, this hangar was delivered in 1935 and quickly played an essential role in the logistics and operations of the Fréjus naval air base.
This hangar, of the “double canopy” type, rests on a reinforced concrete structure, allowing maximum opening without central pillars. This innovative design offered great flexibility for aviation, especially for seaplanes, by allowing aircraft to be parked and repaired without obstruction. The dimensions of the building are impressive: it is almost 100 meters long and over 25 meters high under the ridge, with a roof span of over 40 meters without any central support. A feat of engineering at the time, allowing for large and open interior spaces, ideal for air operations.
Since 2024, Espace Caquot has been adorned with a breathtaking fresco entitled “Fréjus l'Intrépide”, designed by the famous Nice street artist César Malfi.
This remarkable fresco will not only be a static work of art, but a unique immersive experience. With its imposing dimensions of 120 meters long by 12 meters high, it will become the second largest fresco in France. Located at the nature base, a major tourist spot on the Côte d'Azur, it will offer a striking spectacle to all those who have the chance to contemplate it.
