Mémorial de Malpasset

The need to commemorate the memory of the 423 dead and missing during the Malpasset disaster emerged in the first years following the tragedy.
A first work, “The Recumbent Figure,” was installed in 1963. It is now part of a larger memorial.

In 2009, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Malpasset disaster, a memorial was erected near the Roman amphitheater, where the city had been badly hit by the destructive wave and where "Le Gisant" had previously been installed. Michel Mourier's monument consists of several steles where the names of the victims of the tragedy can be found. In the center, several columns are erected and one can read the famous phrase written by General De Gaulle the day after the tragedy "May Fréjus be reborn!"
