A large model of the Roman city of Forum Iulii, made in 2006, welcomes you at the entrance to this museum. The collections are presented in four rooms from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries of the episcopal group of Fréjus.
Many ancient sculpted pieces have been unearthed. Among them, some belonged to the monumental decoration of public and private buildings in the Roman city (theatre, baths, large residences).

This is the case of a head of Jupiter or even of a divinity, dressed in a long robe with tight drapery and a bust of the Two-Headed Hermes in Carrara marble discovered in 1970, which is the most remarkable and famous piece of this museum, today become the symbol of the City of Fréjus.

A mosaic called “the Panther”, deposited in 1921, is also presented and is in a very good state of conservation.

A room dedicated to ancient and modern ceramics bears witness to the installation of a series of workshops and a vast deposit of good quality clay. These clays were exploited until the 20th century. Architectural terracotta plaques, table and kitchenware, amphorae, the collection gives an idea of the variety of the repertoire.

A house discovered under the Piazza Formigé provides a good example of luxurious housing from the Augustan period. The reconstruction of the reception and ceremonial room has a black and white mosaic floor and wall paintings inspired by the models widespread at the beginning of the 1st century AD (third Pompeian style).

Another room presents the results of excavations in different necropolises (ancient cemeteries), located outside the ramparts. Tombs and funerary monuments have been unearthed. The first rite adopted is cremation. You will find urns intended to contain the carbonized remains of the deceased, which are made of different materials such as glass, ceramic, lead and sandstone.

Around the 2nd century, burial appeared, sarcophagi and tombs with tile casings were used.

Many offerings accompanied the deceased in his tomb. The most frequent were ceramic objects and basalmaires (small glass bottles), used to contain perfumed oils. Mirrors, toiletries and small bronze or silver jewels were also deposited. Bronze coins constituted the Obol to Charon, the god responsible for taking the deceased beyond the Styx, the river of the Underworld.
