Halloween in Fréjus: Program and Attractions for the Whole Family
As tradition dictates, on the eve of November 1st, Halloween joyfully invades the Historic Heart of Fréjus.
Little monsters and big pranksters, get ready, because here, it's a party for everyone!
In Fréjus, any occasion is good for having fun, and this magical rendezvous is no exception. But be careful, here, there is no question of terrifying thrills (or almost… some costumes take their role very seriously!).
The atmosphere is more one of laughter than fear, between laughter and wonder at everyone's crazy creations. A witch's silhouette here, a vampire who smiles a little too much there... everyone does their part! And of course, Halloween without candy is unthinkable: they will be on the menu, as well as scary (but nice) shows, a fiery atmosphere, and... surprises!
But shh, we can't reveal everything. We can just tell you this: expect a pumpkin... HUGE!
The History of Halloween
Originally, Halloween is a Celtic holiday of Irish origin. In fact, it was the Irish who brought the tradition to the United States! It is therefore, in reality, the Celtic New Year!
About 3000 years ago, the Celtic calendar did not end on December 31st but on October 31st. And this last night of the year was the night of the god of death: Samhain. In October, the nights get longer and legend has it that ghosts take advantage of this to pay a little visit to the world of the living. However, to prevent the ghosts from coming to haunt them, the Celts used to dress in terrifying costumes to scare the ghosts and to get together to party on the evening of October 31st.
With the arrival of Christianity, Catholics decided, from the 19th century, to celebrate All Saints' Day ("feast of all saints") on November 1st. The name Halloween is a contraction of the English All Hallows'Eve which means the eve of all Hallows'day and which can be translated as "the eve of all saints", or October 31st. The Halloween festival was born!
With her, we find her symbols like the pumpkin or the famous phrase “trick or treat”.
The origins…
Originally, the symbol of this holiday was... a turnip! From the Irish legend of Jack-o'-lantern, condemned to wander eternally in the darkness between hell and heaven, lighting up with a firebrand placed in a carved turnip. In the United States, the turnip was replaced by the pumpkin, which grew in the territory and was easier to carve. The maxim "trick or treat" also draws its sources from Irish history. The poorest families used to knock on the doors of the richest houses once a year to ask for food. These families had the choice to give or not. However, some refusals led the poor families to steal or play tricks on these rich families who refused to help them. This is where the tradition "Trick or Treat" comes from, which we can now translate as "trick or treat".
In Fréjus, Halloween is an opportunity for young and old to wear their scariest costumes and take part in the activities on offer.
